Negative Keywords Will Not Stop Click Fraud (Here Is What They Do Stop)

Negative keywords will not stop click fraud, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of building a better list. Negative keywords control which search queries are allowed to trigger your ad. They have no information about who is behind a click. A competitor searching your exact target term and clicking your ad passes through any negative list you could possibly build, because the query was one you wanted.

This trips up a lot of firms, usually because an agency suggested a negative keyword audit in response to a click fraud question. The audit is worth doing. It is answering a different question. For the wider context see our guide to click fraud in law firm advertising.

What negative keywords actually do

A negative keyword tells Google not to show your ad when a search contains that term. It operates at the auction entry point, before anyone sees anything. The decision is made about the words typed into the search box.

That is a query filter. It is powerful and every legal account should have a maintained list. It is also blind to everything that happens afterward, including who clicks, how many times, from where, and whether they are human.

The gap in one sentence

Negative keywords decide which searches can reach your ad. Click fraud is about who clicks the ad once it has been reached. One is about the query, the other is about the clicker, and no amount of work on the first touches the second.

Why this matters more in legal than elsewhere

Someone deliberately burning your budget is not searching for something irrelevant. They are searching for the exact high-value term you are bidding on, because that is the expensive one. Every negative keyword you add is, by definition, a term you did not want. The attacker is using a term you very much do want.

The same applies to bots. Automated traffic hitting your ads arrives through queries that matched your targeting. Adding negatives for terms nobody searched changes nothing about that.

Bluntly: if your click fraud plan is a negative keyword list, you do not have a click fraud plan.

What negative keywords do stop, and why it matters for law firms

Now the useful part. A good negative list stops a substantial amount of genuine waste, and in a vertical this expensive, that is real money. It is just a different kind of waste.

Job seekers

People searching for legal jobs, paralegal positions, or law firm careers will match your ads with a loose match type. Add job, jobs, career, careers, hiring, salary, employment, internship, resume.

Do-it-yourself searchers

People who want a form, not a lawyer. Free, template, form, pdf, sample, how to file, do it yourself, without a lawyer, self represented. They are not going to hire you at any price.

Students and researchers

Law students, people writing papers, people reading up. Add definition, meaning, statistics, examples, case study, textbook, exam, bar exam, law school.

Wrong practice area

The largest source of waste in most legal accounts. A criminal defense firm matching to family law searches, a personal injury firm matching to workers compensation queries they do not take. Go through your search terms report and block every practice area you do not serve.

Wrong side of the matter

Particularly relevant in legal. A plaintiff-side injury firm does not want defense-side queries. An employee-side employment firm does not want employer-side searches. These queries look topically perfect and convert at zero.

Competitor and directory names

Depending on your strategy, you may want to block searches for other firms by name, plus directory and comparison terms where the searcher is browsing a listing rather than choosing a lawyer.

How to build the list properly

Do not buy a generic negative keyword list. Your search terms report has the real answer, specific to your account.

  • Open the search terms report for the last 90 days, sorted by cost.
  • Read the top 200 queries individually. This takes an hour and is the highest value hour in your account.
  • Add negatives for anything that could never become a client.
  • Put shared negatives at account level and query-specific ones at campaign or ad group level.
  • Repeat monthly. New queries appear constantly.

Watch your match types. A broad match negative can suppress more than you intended, and in a vertical where each click costs what legal costs, over-blocking is expensive in a way you will not notice.

What to do about the actual problem

Once your negative list is doing its job, the clicks you are still paying for came through queries you wanted. That is the point where the real work starts.

The free changes

Set location targeting to presence only rather than presence or interest. Remove search partners and Display from search campaigns. Exclude your own office IP addresses. These take ten minutes and remove a real slice of waste.

IP exclusions

Google Ads allows up to 500 IP exclusions per campaign. Add the sources you can identify. It is a fixed list against a moving target, so treat it as one layer rather than the answer.

Understand what Google credits

Google filters some invalid traffic automatically and issues credits for it, without disclosing what criteria it uses or which clicks it flagged. Useful, unauditable, incomplete. Our page on Google's invalid click refunds covers where it helps and where it leaves you.

Block by behavior instead of by query

The only approach that addresses who is clicking is one that watches click behavior and adds the sources worth excluding to your campaign exclusions as it happens. That is a different mechanism from a keyword list entirely, and it is what click fraud protection is for.

Do both, but know which is which

Maintain the negative keyword list. It stops job seekers, students, DIY searchers, and the wrong practice areas, and in legal that saves real money every month.

Just do not expect it to stop a rival clicking your most expensive term, or a bot working through your ads at three in the morning. Those clicks came in through the front door you deliberately left open. Closing a door you already closed will not help.
